Thanking him for a kind and entertaining letter, with its capital Brewer epigram. Such performances should be published, since laughter is medicinal. He and Mrs. Ruskin have been away since July 14, enjoying the exhibition at Manchester, meeting their son at Edinburgh, and now very slowly travelling south. The remarkable fine weather. He was disappointed in his native Edinburgh, agreeing in all his son says of it in his lectures. He was not well there, or since; & Mrs. Ruskin has had "several little attacks"--Admonishing them that aged people should not be 600 miles away from home. The special interest in arrival of the papers because of "the fearful state of our Indian possessions." Yet he trusts that all will come right, thanks to the quality of their officers and of the men who understand what must be done in India.

Euphemia Chalmers Gray, called Effie or Phemy, was born in Bowerswell House, Perth, and went to Avondale School, near Statford-on-Avon. She married the art critic John Ruskin on 10 April 1848; the marriage was annulled on 15 July 1854; she married John Everett Millais on 3 July 1855. She and Millais had eight children.
